A noble ideal for an ideal world. But absolutely not in these times we live in. Those who need to disarm the most are the ones least likely to do so of their own accord.

There is no ideal world, so disarmament must take place in the real one. Nuclear weapons are immoral and irrational, inhumane and indiscriminate, as they primarily aim at civilian populations, are useless from a military perspective, as they divest public money from short and long term essential goals, and as they are open to be launched by human errors, AI actions, insane leadership, or cyberhacking. Firing a nuclear counter-attack as a reply to a nuclear attack would be no less morally wrong. South Africa divested from its nuclear weapons in 1991. I wish France would have the same rectitude.
