    Ewan Cameron Says:

“Utilising a probabilistic method he committed himself to a direction that was no less aleatory than arbitrary and started wandering thus until twilight fell.”

I saw this in the English translation of The Blue Flowers by Raymond Queneau and wondered (a) if it was close to the original and (b) whether there are any French intellectuals who don’t have at least some background understanding of probability?

    • Ah, Raymond was not your off-the-shelf Rive Gauche intellectual. He was a member of the Société Mathématique de France and wrote a late novel about Hilbert’s conjectures. The French original is quite similar.
