![A recent comment published in Nature makes somewhat rosy and naïve proposals on compensation schemes to face the fuel cuts due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The solutions are not particularly novel and, while objectively reasonable, are not all scaling with the urgency of the matter. Switching from growing fodder to human cereals on a large scale will take years, provided seeds and fertilizers are sufficiently available. Replacing flights by trains requires train line being available, which is not the case everywhere. And building new lines meets with more and more resistance from the locals. Banning cars from city centres and reducing speed limits can be imposed immediately, but without an increase in the public transportation offer [and quality], commuters will be badly impacted and may turn once again in gilets jaunes.](https://i0.wp.com/media.nature.com/lw800/magazine-assets/d41586-022-01616-z/d41586-022-01616-z_23149422.jpg?w=450&ssl=1)
