Thou shall not blink!

One of the last decisions of the short-lived Barnier Government (following the catastrophic decision of Emmanuel Macron calling last June for mid-term elections and resulting in a three body problem!) was to… prohibit the use of flashing lights on bicycles!!! This was clearly (!) a most essential move in a country with no budget for 2025 and a more than likely instability for at least half of 2025. Also in a country where bicycle helmets are not compulsory. (But rejoining Austria, Germany and Holland in that respect.)

The reason advanced for that prohibition is that it made us (cyclists) over-confident on being seen by others (cars) and thus more prone to being run over. This rationale (?!) does not make much sense. Whether a bike light is flashing or steady does not make a difference at night when there are (brighter) lights in the background, e.g. from incoming cars. And during daytime, when lights are not compulsory, the flashing is more likely to attract attention than a permanent light, which is why emergency vehicles are using them, I presume! Last week, I had a scary instant when the oblivious driver of a parked car opened its door as I was passing by, fortunately far enough from the car to avoid being hit, but I do not think this driver would have seen me any better without the flash, given the flow of cars behind me. While it is much more likely I soon get a fine for going through a red light than for keepin’ the blinin’, this remains a possibility in the coming Winter months.

another fine…

free Fall

Summer is off, Fall is back, as now the open air swimming pool has closed, the park opens too late for my schedule, shorts have all but disappeared from the streets and classrooms, the last raspberries have dried out, green tomatoes in my garden are unlikely to get any redder, the ant traps are no longer needed, the watering hose has been stored inside along the umbrella, and eating outdoors becomes a challenge, but the return from the traditional August vacation break has seen an explosion in the number of cyclists on my way to Dauphine, meaning I end up on most trips biking with (or against) other [100% nuke free] cyclists, with an improved trip duration (if not safer trips!). And no connection with the free fall tee!

lesson, test, and results

Two weeks ago, I got stopped by the traffic police in Paris for crossing a red light with my bike. Or more exactly two red lights in a row (the third one having turned green seconds before I went through). The surprise is that it only happened then, given my almost daily ride to Dauphine and my illegal if cautious management of the numerous red lights on my usual route. The policeman was quite polite, given the obvious break of the law, and asked me if he should fine me for the two red lights, at €135 each! Question to which I replied that he was The Law and I could not argue the facts. In the end, he gave me a lecture on the (real) dangers of crossing red lights—which in my opinion and experience are lesser than those of parked cars and scooters pulling out or opening doors without checking first—and warned me that I would get a fine if our paths crossed again at a red light. Which is just fair (even though I should have gotten the fines, in all fairness).

On the way back that evening I decided to count the exact number of lights and the extra-time it would take me when stopping at all red lights. Surprisingly, it only added six minutes to the 30mn± trip (not accounting for the variability on other days, my best time ever being 26:59 two weeks ago, on ±13km), despite the 60-ish lights on my way home. The experiment did not convince me to keep stopping at all red lights, since I find restarting from static always a major pain, but I now pay more attention to my surroundings when doing so. Until I find the technique to run by foot through the lights (which is legit!)…
