So wonderful to be back in Aussois, 20 years later! Same place, same reason, namely a meeting with young statisticians. (Plus the call of the mountains!) And same guide, Baptiste Damevin, as well! Who in the meanwhile got into a mountain accident the very same day I had my climbing accident, albeit a much more serious one since he was swept by an avalanche on the Dent Parrachée—Éric and I climbed with him in 2003—while ski touring, falling down more than 500m and surviving multiple fractures! Five other alpine touring skiers got caught as well, three of whom died. Baptiste did recover from injuries that should have left him permanently incapacitated and resumed his guiding and mountaineering activities. Kudos!!

Fortunately, he was available for a day hike and he took us (Julyan, Guillaume and I) to the Grand Aiguille Rousse (3482m) on a favourable (sunny and decently cold) day. While the hike was reasonably easy, with mostly hard snow, I was still tired from my earlier marathonian efforts and decided to turn back at 3000m before the steepest bits, in order to let the others get to and enjoy the summit. And return back to the car before dark.

off to [ML@]Aussois

Since this is the first time I return to Aussois since 2007 (!), due to difficulties in securing a workshop week long enough in advance (and some complaints from participants to O'Bayes 2003 at the [quite relative] difficulty of getting there, which is only real on national train strikes), I have high expectations of mountaineering with Baptiste, a local guide who took us to the top of Dent Parrachée in 2003, despite a scary slip of mine on a steep section!](https://i0.wp.com/xianblog.fr/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/screenshot-2025-10-29-at-21-24-59-autumn-school-on-recent-advances-in-machine-learning-sciencesconf.org_.png?resize=450%2C305&ssl=1)

Conférence en l’honneur d’Eric Moulines13-14 sept. 2023 IHP Paris (France)
|
There will be a conference / Festschrift held for the 60th birthday of Eric Moulines [longtime friend, coauthor, ERC Synergy co-PI, whom I almost killed when missing a catch on Dent Parrachée!] at Institut Henri Poincaré, Paris, on 13 and 14 September 2023. Registration is free, but compulsory.
These two days will celebrate the variety of the research topics covered by Eric Moulines over thirty years and the broad and thorough impact he had on many different scientific communities. In particular, through more than 100 papers published in highly selective journals, he has made essential contributions in as many fields as statistical signal processing, time series analysis, inference in partially observed models, non-linear filtering, computational statistics, Markov Chain Monte Carlo, stochastic optimization methods, as well as hot topics related to artificial intelligence like generative models, variational inference or Bayesian machine learning.
