which State no longer bans neonicotinoids, farm oversize, water retention mega-basins, and muzzles its biodiversity and food security agencies?

Answer: The French State, most sadly. Both chambers voted in favour of a U-turn in environmental and public health protections, aptly named Loi Duplomb (Lead Law!) that sees

  • Authorising anew neonicotinoïds, that are proven harmful to biodiversity and human health, which are nearly banned by the EU
  • Allowing agents to being simultaneously pesticide advisor and provider
  • Removing limitations on megafarm sizes and limiting public consultations on new projects
  • Promoting water storage projects (so-called megabasins) that increase water shortage and only benefit intensive agriculture
  • Introducing local supervision of the State Biodiversity Office (OFB) and imposing body cameras on its inspectors (some of whom were killed by farmers)
  • Increasing political control on the State Food Security Agency (ANSA) about its judgements on phytopharmaceutical products

The new law gets its name of a right-wing senator and farmer, with the heavy support of the agroindustrial lobby (FNSEA). And was voted with the support of the far-right, right and most of the central block parties, catering to their farming voters. Spray, baby, spray….!

less bats, higher mortality

“…farmers compensated for bat decline by increasing their insecticide use by 31.1%. The compensatory increase in insecticide use by farmers adversely affected health—human infant mortality increased by 7.9% in the counties that experienced bat die-offs.” Eyal G. Frank

A Science article by Eyal Frank got a lot of press last week for linking US bat population plummeting (up to 70%) due to the “white nose syndrom” (an invasive fungus) impacting bats since 2006 (through premature awakening from hibernation) and therefore agriculture, to a huge (8%) rise in infant mortality in the impacted regions, resulting from a jump in the use of insecticides… (The statistical model behind the predicted mortality is a linear model for all dependent outcomes, insecticide use, crop yield, and infant mortality. With plenty of precautions to separate infected counties from non-infected ones and to eliminate exogenous causes.)

Methodological developments in evolutionary genomic [3 years postdoc in Montpellier]

[Here is a call for a post-doctoral position in Montpellier, South of France, not Montpelier, Vermont!, in a population genetics group with whom I am working. Highly recommended if you are currently looking for a postdoc!]

Three-year post-doctoral position at the Institute of Computational Biology (IBC), Montpellier (France) :
Methodological developments in evolutionary genomics.

One young investigator position opens immediately at the Institute for Computational Biology (IBC) of Montpellier (France) to work on the development of innovative inference methods and software in population genomics or phylogenetics to analyze large-scale genomic data in the fields of health, agronomy and environment (Work Package 2 « evolutionary genomics » of the IBC). The candidate will develop its own research on some of the following topics : selective processes, demographic history, spatial genetic processes, very large phylogenies reconstruction, gene/species tree reconciliation, using maximum likelihood, Bayesian and simulation-based inference. We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in mathematical and computational evolutionary biology, with interest in applications and software development. The successfull candidate will work on his own project, build in collaboration with any researcher involved in the WP2 project and working at the IBC labs (AGAP, CBGP, ISEM, I3M, LIRMM, MIVEGEC).

IBC hires young investigators, typically with a PhD plus some post-doc experience, a high level of publishing, strong communication abilities, and a taste for multidisciplinary research. Working full-time at IBC, these young researchers will play a key role in Institute life. Most of their time will be devoted to scientific projects. In addition, they are expected to actively participate in the coordination of workpackages, in the hosting of foreign researchers and in the organization of seminars and events (summer schools, conferences…). In exchange, these young researchers will benefit from an exceptional environment thanks to the presence of numerous leading international researchers, not to mention significant autonomy for their work. Montpellier hosts one of the most vibrant communities of biodiversity research in Europe with several research centers of excellence in the field. This positions is open for up to 3 years with a salary well above the French post-doc standards. Starting date is open to discussion.

The application deadline is January 31, 2015.

Another postdoc offer in Paris

Posted in Travel, University life with tags , , , , on November 21, 2011 by xi'an

Here is an offer for a 6 to 12 month postdoc in Paris, with one theme potentially interesting for Og’s readers:

The CARMIN Project, created as part of the call for “laboratories of excellence” of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, aims at creating  places where mathematicians can exchange and pool their skills in order to solve  big scientific issues. In the mathematics field, there are indeed a  number of open scientific problems that cannot be solved by a single person. This “mathematical” infrastructure is essential for maintaining excellence in the French mathematical school at the highest international level. (More information)

PRESENTATION of the PROGRAMM

As part of the LabEx CARMIN, IHES and IHP offer young researchers in mathematics a joint post-doctoral programme for 2012-2013 that will enable candidates selected by the Scientific Committee to combine a research visit at IHES with participation to one of the quaterly IHP thematic programmes for a duration of 6 to 12 months.

CONDITION

• To have obtained a PhD in 2009 or later.
• To participate in one of the three thematic trimestrial programmes 2012-2013 at IHP:

– 7 January – 5 April 2013: Mathematics and Bio-Economics for the Sustainable Management of Biodiversity (M. DE LARA, L. DOYEN)
– 15 April -12 July 2013: Variational and Spectral Methods in Quantum Mechanics (M. ESTEBAN, M. LEWIN)
