Thou shall not blink!

One of the last decisions of the short-lived Barnier Government (following the catastrophic decision of Emmanuel Macron calling last June for mid-term elections and resulting in a three body problem!) was to… prohibit the use of flashing lights on bicycles!!! This was clearly (!) a most essential move in a country with no budget for 2025 and a more than likely instability for at least half of 2025. Also in a country where bicycle helmets are not compulsory. (But rejoining Austria, Germany and Holland in that respect.)

The reason advanced for that prohibition is that it made us (cyclists) over-confident on being seen by others (cars) and thus more prone to being run over. This rationale (?!) does not make much sense. Whether a bike light is flashing or steady does not make a difference at night when there are (brighter) lights in the background, e.g. from incoming cars. And during daytime, when lights are not compulsory, the flashing is more likely to attract attention than a permanent light, which is why emergency vehicles are using them, I presume! Last week, I had a scary instant when the oblivious driver of a parked car opened its door as I was passing by, fortunately far enough from the car to avoid being hit, but I do not think this driver would have seen me any better without the flash, given the flow of cars behind me. While it is much more likely I soon get a fine for going through a red light than for keepin’ the blinin’, this remains a possibility in the coming Winter months.

psyclepaths….

“In the six days since a law to prosecute dangerous cyclists was announced, somewhere close to 30 people will have been killed on UK roads, none of them struck by bikes. About 500 more will have suffered serious, potentially life-changing injuries, with pretty much all connected to motor vehicles. Again, going on the statistical averages, over those same six days, slightly more than 1,600 people across the UK will have died due to illnesses associated with physical inactivity. Riding a bike cuts your likelihood of developing such conditions by about half.” Peter Walker, Bike blog, The Guardian, 21 May 2024

Indeed, the UK Government is creating a new offence of “causing death or serious injury by dangerous, careless or inconsiderate cycling”! Where dangerous remains to be properly defined and assessed. (As most cyclists have no speedometer, and the remaining ones may prove more dangerous checking their speed on their Garmin watch! As I am when going downhill to Porte de Versailles around 40km/h…, if not 52mph as hilariously denounced by the predictably cyclophobic Daily Mail!) Another illustration of overreaction, cheap fear-mongering, and electoralist populism based on a single horrific deadly accident, and mostly missing the elephant in the room, that is, the lack of proper uninterrupted bike lanes and other infrastructures that should not be shared with pedestrians, cars, or buses. And the intentionally hidden disproportion between car-caused and cycle-caused deaths. (Of course, I am totally biased towards cycling, while some will consider my running managing red lights wanton and furious! But I stand by the fact that cycling usually gets the worst of car and pedestrian regulations.)

As an aside, the pun in the title first came to me as a joke told by Tony O’Hagan, presumably told at a Valencia meeting decades ago. Apparently it is popular enough to be adopted by cycling enthusiasts.

new campus

While I am keeping my office at Porte Dauphine, undergoing major renovations (of the 1955 NATO building!), I am now spending most of my time in a more modern campus, called PariSanté, located at Porte de Versailles, with medical research teams and startups. This is where our master MASH will be located. The place is very luminous and despite the close proximity with the Paris beltway (le périf’), quiet (and much quieter than Paris Dauphine). It is also an ecological absurdity, with a huge sunroof that could not be shaded during the heat waves, plastic trees, self-induced lights, and compulsory lifts. On the memory lane, it is a trip back 35 years ago, as it sits across the road from the Balard military compound where I spent most of my military service in 1987 (working on my PhD in a research department).  And it is conveniently located half-way between home and Paris Dauphine, although not skipping the tough hill of Porte de Versailles on the way back..!

new bike

My university, Paris Dauphine, has recently introduced some support for its cycling staff as a substitute for the compulsory support for public transportation costs. Meaning reimbursing part of the cost of buying a new bike over two years. After one too many trip to the bike repair shop, I thus started looking for a sturdy enough gravel-like) bike with disk brakes (that did not need changing every three weeks!) to handle the Paris cobbles and saw this Trek Domane on sale at the (same) shop, which I bought when returning from Québec. After a few weeks of using it (solely) between home and campus, never to go shopping or swimming!, I am definitely appreciating the comfort and efficiency of this new bike! Hopefully, this will last over the Fall, despite worsening conditions in weather and traffic!
