lecturing in Collège

A few weeks ago I gave a seminar on ABC (and its asymptotics) in the beautiful amphitheatre Marguerite de Navarre (a writer, a thinker, and a protector of writers like Rabelais and of reformist catholics, as well as th sister of the Collège founder, François I) of Collège de France, as complement of the lecture of that week by Stéphane Mallat, who is teaching this year on Learning and random sampling. In this lecture, Stéphane introduced Metropolis-Hastings as one can guess from the blackboards above! The amphitheatre was quite full since master students from several Parisian universities are following the course, along the “general public” since the first principle of the courses delivered at Collège de France is that they are open to everyone, free of charge and without preliminary registration! (As a countermeasure to the monopoly of the university of Paris, following the earlier example of the 1518 trilingual college of Louvain). Here are the slides I partly covered in the lecture.
Masterclass in Bayesian Asymptotics, Université Paris Dauphine, 18-22 March 2024

On the week of 18-22 March 2024, Judith Rousseau (Paris Dauphine & Oxford) will teach a Masterclass on Bayesian asymptotics. The masterclass takes place in Paris (on the PariSanté Campus) and consists of morning lectures and afternoon labs. Attendance is free with compulsory registration before 11 March (since the building is not accessible without prior registration).
The plan of the course is as follows
Part I: Parametric models
In this part, well- and mis-specified models will be considered.
– Asymptotic posterior distribution: asymptotic normality of the posterior, penalization induced by the prior and the Bernstein von – Mises theorem. Regular and nonregular models will be treated.
– marginal likelihood and consistency of Bayes factors/model selection approaches.
– Empirical Bayes methods: asymptotic posterior distribution for parametric empirical Bayes methods.
Part II: Nonparametric and semiparametric models
– Posterior consistency and posterior convergence rates: statistical loss functions using the theory initiated by L. Schwartz and developed by Ghosal and Van der Vaart, results on less standard or well behaved losses.
– semiparametric Bernstein von Mises theorems.
– nonparametric Bernstein von Mises theorems and Uncertainty quantification.
– Stepping away from pure Bayes approaches: generalized Bayes, one step posteriors and cut posteriors.
fake conference

One of my (former) master students approached me last week for support to attend an AI conference in London next May, as he had been invited there as a speaker with the prospect of publishing a paper in an AI journal. And very excited about it. As the letter of invitation definitely sounded fake to me and as Conference Series LLC did not seem connected to anything scientific, I had a quick check whether or not this was another instance of predatory conference and indeed the organisation is an outlet of the (in)famous OMICS International company. Setting conferences all around the year and all around the world by charging participants a significant amount and cramming all speakers on potentially any topic in the same room of a suburban motel (near Heathrow in that case). It is somewhat surprising that they still manage to capture victims but if they aim wide enough to cover students like the one who contacted me and had no idea of the possibility of such scams, no wonder the operation is still running. Coincidence, I was reading a news article in Nature, while in Seoul, that “South Korea’s education ministry wants to stop academics from participating in conferences that it considers “weak” and of little academic value”. I hope it works better than India’s earlier attempt at banning publications in predatory journals.
