Thucydides 2.0

Last weekend, I was listening to one of my favourite (France Inter) radio shows, Quand les dieux rôdaient sur la Terre (when gods roamed the Earth), and the story was about the siege of the tiny island of Melos by the Athenians and the subsequent massacre, based on the report given in Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War and in particular the Melian Dialogue. I was unaware of this episode, but the modern tone of the dialogue excerpts was striking and made me think they equally applied to modern leaders… To wit,

“The strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must.” — Melian Dialogue, Book V

“Most people, in fact, will not take the trouble in finding out the truth, but are much more inclined to accept the first story they hear.” — Book I, §20

“Men naturally despise those who court them, but respect those who do not give way to them.” — Book III, Cleon’s speech

“It is a common mistake in going to war to begin at the wrong end — to act first, and wait for disaster to find out what to do.” — Book I, §78

“Words had to change their ordinary meaning and to take that which was now given them. Reckless audacity came to be considered the courage of a loyal ally; prudent hesitation, specious cowardice.” — Book III, §8

The New York Times reporter Anton Troianovski drew a ghastly parallel between the declarations of Russian officials on the invasion of Ukraine and of US officials on the attacks on Iran.  As a background for the lack to a long term strategy behind these attacks and the highly unlikely emergence of an Iranian democracy…

“[the United States] didn’t start this war, but under President Trump, we are finishing it.” — US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth

“We didn’t start the so-called war in Ukraine. Rather, we are trying to finish it.” — President Vladimir V. Putin

“This is a special military operation. If Russia had started a full-scale war, it would have been over long ago.” Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin

“I think it’s an operation.” — Speaker of the US Congress Mike Johnson

“We haven’t even yet started anything in earnest.” — President Vladimir V. Putin

“We haven’t even started hitting them hard.” — President Donald Trump

“I am appealing to the military of the armed forces of Ukraine. Do not allow neo-Nazis and Banderites to use your children, wives and elders as a live shield. Take power into your own hands.” — President Vladimir V. Putin

“I call upon all Iranian patriots who yearn for freedom to seize this moment to be brave, be bold, be heroic, and take back your country” — President Donald Trump

“the leaders of France, Germany and the UK (…) are the ones that are wrong by refusing to come to the Iranian people’s aid and adding insult to injury, you’re suggesting we should continue to negotiate with religious Nazis.” — US Senator Lindsay Graham

While the NYT article does not get into a similar mirroring with Israel official statements on their attacks on Iran and Lebanon, they also follow the very same warlike rhetoric…

[Extracts from DT’s unhinged declarations on 19 Feb about Ukraine:]

“But today I heard: ‘Oh, well, we weren’t invited.’ Well, you’ve been there for three years. You should have ended it three years. You should have never started it. You could have made a deal.”

“A Dictator without Elections, Zelenskyy better move fast or he is not going to have a Country left. We have a situation where we haven’t had elections in Ukraine. Well, we have martial law, essentially martial law in Ukraine, where the leader in Ukraine, I mean, I hate to say it, but he’s down at 4% approval rating and where a country has been blown to smithereens. You got most of the cities are laying on their sides.”

“Russia does not intend to destroy Kyiv, if they had wanted to, they would have done it. Russia is capable of wiping out Ukrainian cities 100%, including Kyiv, but right now, they are only attacking at 20%.”

“Russia wants to do something. They want to stop the savage barbarianism [sic].”

[And more during the joint session with Emmanuel Macron, on 24 Feb.]

“I don’t use those words lightly [when asked whether or not Putin is a dictator], we’ll see how it all works out.”

“The European Union was formed in order to screw the United States. That’s the purpose of it, and they’ve done a good job of it.”

[With the newspeak winner about the January 6 rioters’ pardon]

“I pardoned J6 people who were assaulted by our government. They didn’t assault. They were assaulted, and what I did was a great thing for humanity.”

[All these quotes were recorded before the 28 Feb deliberate ambush of President Zelenskyy set by the boned spurred Agent Orange and his hillbilly Iago, reaching the all-times nadir of US international relations…]

Ukraine was invaded three years ago…

It has been three years since Russia invaded Ukraine with the purpose of recovering USSR territories and resources, and putting in place a puppet government, under the pretexts that the current Ukraine’s government was dominated by neo-Nazis (!) and perpetuating a genocide in Donbas. With further arguments that the “West” (or NATO) was preparing a war on Russia. Ukraine’s resistance was unexpected by the invaders and put a stop to the notion that a few day Blitzkrieg would topple the Ukrainian government. Forward three years and the difference in numbers and resources has made Ukraine’s resistance stretched and desperate. The return of the Orange Menace and his pretence at achieving deals on every matter is making the outcome of the war even bleaker as the Trump administration shows no empathy for Ukranians (among many others!). Especially if Trump pulls the USA out of NATO altogether. In this case, it is alas hard to imagine EU sending (enough) peacekeepers to Ukraine, and even harder to imagine they could oppose further Russian attacks and crimes, as shown by the failures of UNPROFOR in ex-Yougoslavia, in particular Bosnia…
