step-dads with Bayesian design [One World ABC’minar, 21 March]

The next One World ABC seminar is taking place (on-line, requiring pre-registration) on Thursday 21 March, 9:00am UK time, with Desi Ivanova (University of Oxford), speaking about Step-DAD: Semi-Amortized Policy-Based Bayesian Experimental Design:

We develop a semi-amortized, policy-based, approach to Bayesian experimental design (BED) called Step-wise Deep Adaptive Design (Step-DAD). Like existing, fully amortized, policy-based BED approaches, Step-DAD trains a design policy upfront before the experiment. However, rather than keeping this policy fixed, Step-DAD periodically updates it as data is gathered, refining it to the particular experimental instance. This allows it to improve both the adaptability and the robustness of the design strategy compared with existing approaches.

(Which reminded me of George’s book on design in 2008.)

The ABC in Svalbard workshop is taking place on-line next week (and most sadly not in Svalbard). The programme is available on the ABC site. It starts (in Australia) at 4:00GMT (14 AEST) and finishes (in France) at 15:30GMT (17:30 CET). Registration is free but needed to access the Zoom codes!  See you on Zoom next week!!!

ABC World seminar

With most of the World being more or less confined at home, conferences cancelled one after the other, including ABC in Grenoble!, we are launching a fortnightly webinar on approximation Bayesian computation, methods, and inference. The idea is to gather members and disseminate results and innovation during these coming weeks and months under lock-down. And hopefully after!

At this point, the interface will be Blackboard Collaborate, run from Edinburgh by Michael Gutmann, for which neither registration nor software is required. Before each talk, a guest link will be mailed to the mailing list. Please register here to join the list.

The seminar is planned on Thursdays at either 9am or more likely 11:30 am UK (+1GMT) time, as we are still debating the best schedule to reach as many populated time zones as possible!, and the first speakers are

09.04.2020 Dennis Prangle Distilling importance sampling
23.04.2020 Ivis Kerama and Richard Everitt Rare event SMC²
07.05.2020 Umberto Picchini Stratified sampling and bootstrapping for ABC
