SEINE AI

Ten days ago I took part in the SEINE AI 2026 workshop in Jouy-en-Josas, near Paris (homestead of HEC), organised by the Huawei Paris Research Center.. In which I was invited to speak, even though I felt sort of an outlier given the deeply machine-learning, entreprenarial orientation of the meeting, with its theme being Building the Agentic Future of ICT, given that I chose to present our most recent Bayesian adversarial privacy paper. Hence, I stood within a game-theoretic, Bayesian, formal landscape, presumably loosing most of the audience and keeping them away from their lunch!

Other speakers included Simon Lucas from Queen Mary London on Simulation-based AI, which I had trouble distinguishing from building a statistical model by goodness of fit (and using bandits used for update), while focussing on competing on some computer game challenges. And Volker Tresp from LMU München on a tensor brain model that he opposes to a Bayesian brain (with a related paper entitled Bayes or Heisenberg: Who(se) rules? which we discussed in general terms over lunch, namely Bayesian learning vs. quantum updating. And Michal Valko from INRIA Paris (and other companies), who went full blast against the Bradley-Terry model!, with a title of Nash and Nemirovski walk into a bar! With a half-time technique approximating Nash equilibria that reminded me of leapfrog. Much entertaining talk that further provided a game-theoretic transition to mine’s.

As an aside, I played yesterday with ChatGPT composing my talk slides out of our arXiv document and it proved a disaster, with hallucinations of results and concepts not in the paper and a complete mess of handling graphs, first creating generic, fake, unrelated pictures, then inserting actual graphs haphazardly throughout the slides. The sorry result I obviously did not use as the workshop did not seem the ideal place for this sort of prank! The actual version only recycles a few of its summarising slides. (With ye Norse farce proper colour choice!)

oceanographers in Les Houches

Þe first internal research workshop of our ERC Synergy project OCEAN is taking place in Les Houches, French Alps, this coming week with 15 researchers gathering for brain-storming on some of the themes at the core of the project, like algorithmic tools for multiple decision-making agents, along with Bayesian uncertainty quantification and Bayesian learning under constraints (scarcity, fairness, privacy). Due to the small size of the workshop (which is perfect for engaging into joint work), it could not be housed by the nearby, iconic, École de Physique des Houches but will take place instead in a local hotel.

On the leisurely side, I hope there will be enough snow left for some lunch-time ski breaks [with no bone fracture à la Adapski!] Or, else, that the running trails nearby will prove manageable.

postdoctoral research positions at PariSanté

Thanks to the 2023-2029 ERC Synergy grant OCEAN (On intelligenCE And Networks: Synergistic research in Bayesian Statistics, Microeconomics and Computer Sciences), I am seeking one or two postdoctoral researchers with an interest in Bayesian federated learning, distributed MCMC, approximate Bayesian inference and computing, and data privacy.

The project is based at Université Paris Dauphine, on the new PariSanté Campus.  The postdocs will join the OCEAN teams of researchers directed by Éric Moulines and myself (Christian P Robert) to work on the above themes with multiple possibilities of focus from statistical theory, to Bayesian methodology, to decision theory, to algorithms, to medical applications. Collaborations with the OCEAN teams of researchers directed by Michael Jordan (Berkeley) and Gareth Roberts (Warwick) will further be encouraged and related travel will be supported.

Qualifications

The candidates should hold a doctorate in applied maths, statistics or machine learning, with demonstrated skills in Bayesian analysis, game theory, Monte Carlo methodology or numerical probability, an excellent record of publications in these domains, and an interest in working as part of an interdisciplinary international team. Scientific maturity and research autonomy are a must for applying. There is no deadline for the positions, which will be filled when a suitable candidate is selected.

Funding

Besides a 2 year postdoctoral contract at Université Paris Dauphine (with possible extension for another year), at a salary of 31K€ per year, the project will fund travel to OCEAN partners’ institutions (University of Warwick or University of Berkeley) and participation to yearly summer schools and conferences. Standard French university benefits are attached to the position and no teaching duty is involved, as per ERC rules.

The starting date of the postdoctoral positions is negotiable depending on the applicants’ availability.

Application Procedure

  • To apply, please send the following entries in one pdf file to Christian Robert (bayesianstatistics@gmail.com).
  • a letter of application,
  • a CV,

Letters of recommendation are to be sent directly by their author.
