attending a predatory conference

Nature of 18 July 2024 ran a story about predatory conferences, with an actual reporter on the ground! More precisely in the vicinity of Heathrow where they interviewed victims of this scam. Which reminded me of earlier instances, like when I had to explain the concept of a predatory conference to a Master student who was so excited to be invited to a conference. Or when I almost went to a Montparnasse hotel in Paris to check on the actual audience of a superposition of OMICS conferences on every imaginable topic, all happening together in the same room of that hotel. Which is exactly the situation reported in that article… A scary figure inside is that these predatory conferences are becoming “now more plentiful than legitimate ones”. Although this does not mean more people attend fake conferences than legit ones (Nature advances the figure of 10% researchers attending these pseudo-conferences.). The journal also address the elephant in the room, namely as to why people attend such conferences. Very junior researchers may get confused if this is their first invitation, but then why don’t they get a proper warning from their funding bodies or their senior colleagues?! And there is the acknowledgement that some researchers do attend fake conferences in full knowledge of the scam.

“They might be flattered to be invited or attracted by a glamorous location; questionable conferences often take place in tourist hotspots. Or they might attend simply to add a line to their CV.”

The examples chosen by Nature are obviously predatory in that they are run by an only-for-profit company, without a scientific board or society at the helm, and cramming talks about unrelated topics in a single hotel conference room (or online). One could think of extending the definition, though, to conferences without a clear scientific purpose, witness a yearly series I can think of (!) merging statistics and econometrics sub-conferences without an active scientific board, each session being the responsibility of its organiser. The one occasion I attended, both the sessions I talked in and I organised were only attended by the speakers…

ABC in Kuala Lumpur [alas not!]

While attending an “ABC in…” conference in Malaysia would have been most exciting, barring the current difficulties with traveling, especially since I had not heard of it at an earlier stage and also had never visited Malaysia (except when considering that Singapore was was one of the 14 states of Malaysia from 1963 to 1965), the “International Conference on Approximate Bayesian Computation in Science and Engineering”, scheduled for Feb 2021 is alas not the right opportunity! As a fake conference run by WASET, the “World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology”, which runs thousands of conferences every year, usually cramming several of them in the very same room at the very same time in a periphery motel..! As attendees, if any, are not expected to… attend. Judging from the current list of “selected papers”, none of them has any connection with ABC. It would be funny, were it not a swindle of sorts…

whazzat?! [scam conferences inc.]

Tour Eiffel from Pont de l'Alma, Paris, Dec. 16, 2012Earlier today, I received an invitation to give a plenary talk at a Probability and Statistics Conference in Marrakech, a nice location if any! As it came from a former graduate student from the University of Rouen (where I taught before Paris-Dauphine), and despite an already heavy travelling schedule for 2016!, I considered his offer. And looked for the conference webpage to find the dates as my correspondent had forgotten to include those. Instead of the genuine conference webpage, which had not yet been created, what I found was a fairly unpleasant scheme playing on the same conference name and location, but run by a predator conglomerate called WASET.  WASET stands for World Academy of Science, Engineering, and Technology. Their website lists thousands of conferences, all in nice, touristy, places, and all with an identical webpage. For instance, there is the ICMS 2015: 17th International Conference on Mathematics and Statistics next week. With a huge “conference committee” but no a single name I can identify. And no-one from France. Actually, the website kindly offers entry by city as well as topics, which helps in spotting that a large number of ICMS conferences all take place on the same dates and at the same hotel in Paris… The trick is indeed to attract speakers with the promise of publication in a special issue of a bogus journal and to have them pay 600€ for registration and publication fees, only to have all topics mixed together in a few conference rooms, according to many testimonies I later found on the web. And as clear from the posted conference program! In the “best” of cases since other testimonies mention lost fees and rejected registrations. Testimonies also mention this tendency to reproduce the acronym of a local conference. While it is not unheard of conferences amounting to academic tourism, even from the most established scientific societies!, I am quite amazed at the scale of this enterprise, even though I cannot completely understand how people can fall for it. Looking at the website, the fees, the unrelated scientific committee, and the lack of scientific program should be enough to put those victims off. Unless they truly want to partake to academic tourism, obviously.
